On Wednesday, Dec. 28, William L. Norwood, M.D., a robotic surgeon at Willis-Knighton Health System, was the second surgeon in the United States to remove a diseased gallbladder through a patient’s navel through a single incision with the aid of a new FDA-approved da Vinci Si Surgical System. It was the first surgery of its kind in Louisiana and was performed at Willis-Knighton Medical Center. Norwood removed the gallbladder in a short amount of time through a very small incision in the patient’s navel.
“I am very happy that Willis Knighton Hospital is able to offer this type of 21st century surgery because of the many wonderful benefits it affords the patient,” said Norwood.
Single-Site Instrumentation provides da Vinci Si customers with a technology that enables cholecystectomy (gallbladder surgery) via a single incision, while providing the benefits of traditional multiport da Vinci Surgery - enhanced surgical precision, control and stability and 3D HD visualization. Willis-Knighton Medical Center is one of five Intuitive epicenters in the United States to offer the da Vinci Single-Site surgery.
